Fly Fishing
Welcome to the "Ultimate Fly Fishing Adventure!"
North Star Resort has always welcomed fly-fishers from abroad, since day one many a fly-fisher have experienced and understood what we mean by the "Ultimate Fly-Fishing Adventure!"
Picture yourself fly-fishing for the most sought after northern gamefish, the ferocious Northern Pike, feisty Walleye and the elusive Sea-run Brook Trout. At North Star Resort this opportunity becomes reality!
Fly fishing at North Star Resort is primarily done from the casting decks of our 18ft Lund Outfitter boats. The option of wading in shallow bays during the spring months is also a possibility. Whatever style or species you choose to fish, having the right equipment is very important.
Sea Run Brook Trout
Over the past eight years Knee Lake Resort has researched and explored the Sea-Run Brook Trout fishery on the historic Hayes River. We found the Sea-Runs, up to 26 inches, simply unbelievable! This fishery is noted as being "World Class" by our friends at Orvis, In-Fisherman Magazine and Bob Izumi's Real Fishing Show. Very few have experienced this phenomenal fishery and historical setting.
Sea-Run Brook Trout are probably one of the most aggressive trout species, both in feeding habits and fighting technique. After being hooked a Sea-Run will do whatever it can to break you off. This means long runs through rocks, heavy current, rapids and whatever else it can find. Lengthy fighting times, as we all know, can be fatal for a fish, especially those of trophy size. To eliminate this problem we use a minimum 6-weight combination with a fast tip and a 6 or 8lb leader and tippet. This will able you to keep the fish within a comfortable distance at all times and land the fish within a safe time.
Northern Pike
Fly-fishing for Northern Pike is an all season opportunity at North Star Resort. You can sight fish for them during the spring months of May or June or experience weed bed fishing at its best from July to September. Your professional fly-fishing guide will be at your side to assist and insure your success. No matter when you choose to come the Pike will always be plentiful and the chance of catching that fish of a lifetime will always be there.
Landing a Northern Pike on the fly has become an addiction for some and a dream for many others, and for good reasons. A big Pike can and will strip you past your backing within seconds, that legendary "bulldog" run puts even the best fly fisher and gear through a true test. We recommend using a minimum rod, reel and line combination of 9 with a fast tip and 9 feet in length, this will insure an effective hook set and enough backbone and leverage to get that fish in quickly. A floating or intermediate line will be needed. Anything less than a 9-weight combo just won't do the job properly. Heavy-duty mono leaders (30 to 40lb test) with 12 to 18 inch Nylo Strand or Tyger Wire tippets is a sure bet for terminal gear.
Walleye
Knee Lake holds an abundant population of Walleyes that can offer steady action and above average size to the eager fly-fisher. Walleyes can be caught on the fly rod from May to September on shallow and deep-water presentation. Not only do Walleyes compete for the best eating fish but they will also give a heck of a fight. Most Walleyes at Knee Lake average between 19 to 24 inches, numerous 25 to 28 inch fish are also taken each year.
The perfect set up for Walleyes is a fast tip, 9-foot, 6-weight combo. This will give you the needed backbone to set that fly into the Walleye's armoured mouth and allow you to cast medium flies. A full sinking or sinking tip line will be needed. Terminal tackle can be quite basic, a 6 or 8lb test mono leader will definitely do the job.
